Chequamegon Long Distance FAQs:

What is Chequamegon Long Distance?
Chequamegon Long Distance (CLD) is a new competitor in the long distance market. Offered by Chequamegon Communications, it gives you a local connection for your long distance service and provides a single point of contact for all your telecommunications needs.

Why is CLD being offered now?
Chequamegon Communications has always been a leader in providing new services. This is another example of answering the customer's requests. But providing long distance service costs money. Now several small telephone companies in northwestern Wisconsin have agreed to pool their customers usage, providing us the same buying power of a large company. That gives all of us the ability to share in volume discount pricing.

What about those 5 cent per minute calls?
Extended Community Calling (ECC) rates won't change. You'll continue to pay five cents a minute for calls to those exchanges that border you or are within a 15 mile radius. (See information on pages 6 and 7 of our current directory.) For ECC calls, you dial only the seven digit phone number and pay the 5 cent per minute rate. Choosing CLD doesn't affect those rates.

Will CLD handle all my calls?
Yes. CLD can complete all calls you're making today. CLD can be your toll provider for both NorthWest LATA and interLATA calls. (NorthWest LATA calls are generally those long distance calls placed within the northwest quarter of Wisconsin. InterLATA calls are those made to all other locations.) CLD will issue calling cards to those customers requesting them and can also provide 800 numbers.

How will my capital credits be affected?
They won't change at all. As a member of the cooperative, you'll still get credits assigned at the end of each year for all calls made using CLD.

Does CLD offer calling cards?
We offer Post-paid Calling Cards, Pre-paid Calling Cards, and Business Calling Cards.

Post-paid Calling Cards : Rates $0.11 per minute $0.50 surcharge for payphone use. Billed on your regular monthly phone bill * not subject to LD Call Plans.

"Refresh Options" available at $26.38 for 500 minutes or $52.75 for 1000 minutes. Cards expire 1 year after last refresh.  Does not Include International Calling.

Reasons to make the change now.

  1. You can start saving on long distance calls right away.
  2. You can call one company for all your communications needs. We'll have knowledgeable, local people answering the questions you have. You may even see us in church, shopping for groceries, or watching the same school athletic competition.
  3. Keep your money in town. What does your current long distance company contribute to your community?
How do I change to CLD?
You must request the change in writing and mail it to the Chequamegon Communications office in Cable. Please indicate on your request if you wish to have ALL your calls or just your NorthWest LATA calls or just your interLATA calls changed to CLD.
