Surge Protector Tips
Protecting your technology investments is important. Here are
some tips for choosing the right surge protector:
UL-1449 rating. Look for this specific UL
rating, not just the "UL Listed" symbol.
A clamping voltage of 330. This is the level
at which the device begins to block a power surge. The lower
the clamping voltage the better. (Also referred to as the UL
1449 suppressed voltage rating).
Peak surge current (also referred to as maximum
transient current or maximum surge). The higher the better;
54,000 amperes or higher is recommended.
Energy rating of at least 400 joules. This
measures the ability to absorb surges. The higher the rating
the better.
An indicator light or alarm that lets you
know a high-level surge has occurred.
A warranty against damage to any connected
equipment.
Filters for line noise, also known as electromagnetic
interference.
You might also consider adding an uninterruptible power
supply (UPS) for your computer. It keeps your machine
running long enough to back up data in case of a power outage.
