Totally Wired:
At Home with General Manager Dave Carter

The House
Technology at home is a great thing – so let me show you around. We had a new home built in 2000 and I wired it with multiple coaxial, speaker, and Cat 5 telephone and data wire. We have speakers in almost every room with wall controls to control the music. With the coax we can control and view our DVD player in any room, while the Cat 5 wiring provides Internet access everywhere. I recommend putting as much cable in your home as you can so you'll always have wires where you need them – technology is everywhere in the Carter home.

Virtual Workers
My wife Colleen works full time out of our home for the American Cancer Society. She is connected to all their offices using a virtual private network (VPN) – it's just like she was sitting in one of their regional offices. I am also able to connect to Chequamegon Communication Cooperative's network using a VPN. I can access all files and information on our main servers, and have the same model IP business phone at home as I do at work. It operates just like I was sitting in Cable at my desk.

Fun Time
But we don't just work at home – our son has a computer he uses for gaming, and two of my hobbies are woodworking and motorcycles. Web sites that I go to frequently include:
www.harley-davidson.com - Harley Davidson site
www.finewoodworking.com - Woodworking site
www.thewoodwhisperer.com –Blog dedicated to woodworking
I also check eBay, and shop on amazon.com, rockler.com and many others. Living in a house wired for technology makes everything faster, easier and more adaptable.
